3 Rules for a Non-Toxic Beauty Routine

You probably already know the importance of eating a healthy diet and staying active. Those are some of the best ways to naturally detox your body. But there’s another element of health we don’t think about as much: the skin or beauty products we use every day.

Chemicals and other toxins are present in many traditional beauty products, such as face and body lotions, shampoos and conditioners, and makeup. So it’s important to use non-toxic alternatives as much as possible. Here are some of the tops ways to do that.

1. Look Closely at the Ingredients

It can sometimes be hard to know what specific ingredients means on skin care products. Here are some general rules.

Look at the label and scan for any red flags. These ingredients are some of the top to avoid:

  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol
  • Butylene glycol
  • Phthalates
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • DEA (diethanolamine)
  • MEA (monoethanolamine)
  • TEA (triethanolamine)
  • Triclosan
  • Dioxin
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Urea
  • FD&C color and pigments
  • Polyethylene glycol

If you see any of these on your current products, it might be time to look for alternatives.

2. Find Alternative Options In Person or Online

There are a few different ways to look for cleaner products.

One way is by going to a natural products store and ask an employee what would be a good substitute for what you currently have.

You can also use online databases to look up the “cleanness” levels of popular products. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database is probably the most popular and uses a rating system based on the quality of ingredients to guide you.

3. Be Open to Differences in Products

Understand that sometimes when harmful ingredients are removed from a product, it might change how it works. This can take some time and patience to find natural alternatives that work best for you. For example, some non-toxic makeup foundations might need to be shaken before using because they don’t contain the chemicals that help keep them blended.

But over time you’ll get used to the differences and find the best way to use them so you can look and feel beautiful as well as clean from harmful chemicals and additives!
